Doja Cat left little to the imagination when she stepped onto the red carpet for the 2023 MTV Music Video Awards on Tuesday (September 12).
I can’t say that I’m surprised by this Monse custom dress, because I have said time and time again, that we are edging ever closer to nudity on the red carpet.
This hand-knitted spider web gown was inspired by the artist Louise Bourgeois’ iconic ‘Maman’ spider sculpture.
As someone who grew up with my mother creating what I deemed as magic with wool and two needles, I can appreciate this dress from a design aspect, and how the look weaves together the worlds of fashion and art.
But I strongly believe that the bare nipples weren’t necessary, and this dress would’ve looked better with seamless underwear.
The desperation for “shock value” is what ultimately turned me off.
Give this to FKA twigs, who Doja Cat is seemingly wanting to emulate style-wise but in a more dramatic fashion, and we would’ve had a better outcome.
Of that I’m convinced.
A selection of jewels including a YESSAYAN Alexandrite and diamond cocktail ring and PVC pumps completed her look.
