Breaking: New Zealand became the second team to win a Test match by 1 run, beat England in Wellington

New Zealand became only the second team in the history of Test cricket to win a Test match by one run when they beat England in Wellington on the fifth day of the second Test on Tuesday (February 28). West Indies are the only team to achieve the feat, beating Australia by the same margin in Adelaide in 1993.

Tim Southee’s team became the fourth team in the history of Test cricket to win a Test match after a follow-on. India, led by Sourav Ganguly, was the last team to win after a follow-on, defeating Australia in the historic Eden Gardens Test match in 2001.

Winning test matches after following on…
– England (20 December 1894 at Sydney Cricket Ground)
– England (at Headingley, Leeds on 21 July 1981)
– India (at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 15 March 2001)
– New Zealand (at Basin Reserve, Wellington, today!)#ENGvsNZ #NZvsENG

England needed just 2 runs to win when James Anderson was bowled by Neil Wagner. However, off the second ball of the 75th over, Anderson was tickled down the leg-side and wicket-keeper Tom Blundell took a catch down the leg-side with England just 1 run away from the target.

The visitors needed 258 runs to win and were 80 for 5 on the final day, but former captain Joe Root scored an unbeaten 153 in the first innings with a brilliant 95 off 113 balls to keep them in the hunt. But Wagner suffered a crucial double blow from Root and England captain Ben Stokes (32) as he took 4/62 in the innings.

Wicket-keeper Ben Foakes kept them in the hunt and scored 35 runs in 57 balls to reach the target of 7 runs and was caught by Wagner at fine leg of Tim Southee. With this thrilling win, New Zealand leveled the two-match Test series 1-1.

Last man James Anderson hit a boundary down the ground to leave England two runs away from victory and the crowd held their breath. Then in the last, dramatic moment, No. 11 Anderson was caught down the leg side by Neil Wagner and New Zealand won.

“This one is special,” said Wagner. “We will celebrate this amazing achievement. It is something we are extremely proud of.”

England twice and India the only team to have the right to test after the follow-on. The last time was in 2001 when India beat Australia by 171 runs at Eden Gardens.
