English cricket supporters have made a touching gesture toward Australian captain Pat Cummins and his terminally ill mother.
The Barmy Army, the travelling supporter base for the English Cricket team, is currently in New Zealand for the Test series between the two nations.
Cummins, meanwhile, has returned home from the Test series against India to be with his ailing mother who is in palliative care.
‘I have decided against returning to India at this time as my mother is ill and in palliative care. I feel I am best being here with my family,’ he said.
‘I appreciate the overwhelming support I have received from Cricket Australia and my teammates. Thanks for your understanding.’

Cummins mother’s name is Maria and the trumpet player from the Barmy Army played the song Maria from West Side story during the Test match between England and New Zealand.
Some of the song lyrics to Maria include: ‘The most beautiful sound I ever heard, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, all the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word’
Cummins himself shared the video and thanked the English fans for their support.
‘This is amazing Barmy Army, thank you. Mum loved watching this and felt very touched,’ he posted.
The gesture captured the hearts of cricket fans around the world, including an Indian cricket supporter who reminded the sporting public of the $50,000 donation the Aussie skipper made for Covid aid in India.
‘What a tribute by the true gentleman from the Barmy army; prayers and respect for you Pat; you are a great sportsman who epitomises all that is good in humanity; who can forget your Covid gesture for Indians impacted,’ They posted.

An English supporter said the gesture reminded them that is just sport at the end of the day.
‘Proud to be English when I see this! Yes we have banter on the field but when the enemy is having a tough time personally the Barmy Army supports the player through it,’ he posted.
Unfortunately, many Australian fans have been far from supportive of Cummins with most comments not fit for publication.
‘More respect for him than what most Aussies are showing,’ an English cricket fan posted.
‘Amazing. Shame he isn’t getting the same support from a large part of the Aussie public,’ added another.
‘Totally agree with you.. It’s disgusting what is being said,’ replied another fan.
The horrible messages from Australian supporters were slammed by long-term broadcaster Glenn Mitchell.
‘Twitter can be a cesspool. I can’t believe some of the comments being made about Pat Cummins’ decision to stay home to support his mother who is in palliative care,’ he said.
‘For those doing so turn a mirror on yourself and ask what would you do in a similar situation. And then, shut up.’
