Liverpool’s season plummeted to a new low after their 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday.
The heavy loss to Los Blancos was the Reds’ biggest home defeat in their history and leaves Jurgen Klopp’s side facing an ‘almost impossible’ task to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals.
Liverpool are already out of both domestic cup competitions and are languishing in eighth place in the Premier League – seven points off the top four – after an inconsistent and disappointing season, just months on from narrowly missing out on an unprecedented quadruple.
Many stalwarts who have been integral to the club’s success over recent years such as Fabinho and Joel Matip have looked a shadow of their former selves recently, leading to several calls for a squad overhaul in the summer.
In light of that, Sportsmail takes a look at the future of every member of Klopp’s squad and outlines who should be moved on and who should stay in the summer.
Liverpool are enduring a torrid season and there are significant calls for a squad overhaul
GOALKEEPERS
Alisson: Best in the world and Liverpool’s player of the season. STAYS
Caoimhin Kelleher: Highly regarded but wants to play and may leave. UP IN THE AIR
Adrian: Out of contract in the summer and should move. LEAVES
Despite his error against Real, Alisson remains a world class keeper and is Liverpool’s player of the season
DEFENDERS
Trent Alexander-Arnold: In poor form but his ability is not in question. STAYS
Virgil van Dijk: Had a difficult season but Liverpool are better with him than without. STAYS
Joe Gomez: His confidence is on the floor but he signed a new five-year deal last summer. UP IN THE AIR
Joel Matip: Approaching the final year of his contract but is popular with team-mates. UP IN THE AIR
Ibrahima Konate: Likely to become the main figure of Liverpool’s back four in the coming years. STAYS
Andrew Robertson: Plenty of life left in this engine, still has more to give. STAYS
Kostas Tsimikas: Someone Liverpool could look to sell to raise funds. UP IN THE AIR
Nat Phillips: Received a lot of interest from other clubs in January and needs to play. LEAVES
Klopp will have a decision to make on the inconsistent pair of Joe Gomez (L) and Joel Matip (R)
MIDFIELD
Jordan Henderson: Hugely important and will not be going anywhere. STAYS
James Milner: Wants to keep playing but how much game time will he get? UP IN THE AIR
Naby Keita: Out of contract and has never truly delivered. LEAVES
Fabinho: Unrecognisable from the player he once was and may be shown the door. LEAVES
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: Out of contract and already looking at other clubs. LEAVES
Harvey Elliott: Klopp loves the 19-year-old’s exuberance and rates him highly. STAYS
Stefan Bajcetic: His emergence this season has been a happy narrative. STAYS
Fabio Carvalho: Well-regarded but needs to play more and would benefit from a loan. UP IN THE AIR
Thiago Alcantara: With 12 months left on his contract, he will see it through. STAYS
Curtis Jones: Great character but not shown he can be consistent in Premier League. UP IN THE AIR
Fabinho and Naby Keita are two midfielders who could make way to aid Klopp’s rebuild
FORWARDS
Mo Salah: Will not be going anywhere after signing a new deal last year. STAYS
Roberto Firmino: Klopp wants him to stay but where does he fit in? LEAVES
Cody Gakpo: His Anfield career is just getting started. STAYS
Luis Diaz: Will enliven the team when he returns from injury. STAYS
Diogo Jota: Had a wretched time with his fitness but remains a class act. STAYS
Darwin Nunez: A star in the making who will score 25 goals next season. STAYS
Klopp may want Roberto Firmino to stay, but with several options it could be time to move on
