Erik ten Hag has drawn inspiration from Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League clash with Barcelona at Old Trafford.
The two men were pictured deep in conversation over dinner at Wilmslow restaurant Cibo before United’s play-off second leg against the Catalans on Thursday night.
Ferguson, 81, lost two Champions League finals to Barca in 2009 and 2011, but also enjoyed two famous victories in the 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup final and 2008 Champions League semi-final.
United also drew 3-3 in both group games with Barcelona on route to winning the Treble in 1999.
Asked at his pre-match press conference at Carrington on Wednesday about his meeting with Ferguson, Ten Hag said he welcomed the advice from the legendary United boss.

‘It’s massive. I always enjoy speaking with people who have a lot of knowledge, a lot of experience,’ he said. ‘He wants to share it, he wants to help and support.
‘Manchester United is his club and he feels so committed. We are doing well. It was a great night and I look forward to the next night with him.’
Ten Hag rallied United fans as he left the pitch after Sunday’s win over Leicester, and is looking forward to one of the great European nights at Old Trafford as he tries to secure a place in the last 16.
This tie is arguably his biggest European game as a coach since Ajax’s 2019 Champions League semi-final defeat to Tottenham, but the Dutchman said: ‘For me, the next game is always the biggest game.
‘I’m not the one, the type who looks back, I look forward. I’m excited about tomorrow. Two great teams facing each other at Old Trafford.
‘A massive atmosphere, a great ambience, it’s the best you can get.’
The Dutchman is still fighting for silverware on all four fronts in his first season since arriving at Old Trafford and what better person to lean on for advice that club legend Ferguson.
The Scotsman was a serial winner at United with a real stand-out season being when he won the treble in 1999 with United.
The Red Devils have the opportunity to progress in the Europa League on Thursday evening against Spanish giants Barcelona after drawing 2-2 in the first leg.
