French sports newspaper L’Equipe haven’t held back in their notoriously brutal player ratings on Wednesday as they ripped through Liverpool following their humiliating 5-2 home defeat by Real Madrid.

The Reds became the first team in Champions League history to take a 2-0 lead and lose by a three-goal margin after they were picked apart by the Champions League holders in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

And in the Anfield aftermath, L’Equipe have picked apart Jurgen Klopp’s side – with everyone in the firing line.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has caught the biggest wrath with the centre back given just a 2/10 for his display.

The French publication didn’t hold back on the 25-year-old writing: ‘Jurgen Klopp will undoubtedly regret having established him in place of [Joel] Matip.

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez has been blasted by L’Equipe after his shabby showing vs Real Madrid

Gomez was given a torrid time by Real as they won 5-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday

L’Equipe gave him a 2/10 and put the defender at fault for all five of Liverpool’s goals conceded

‘Because the English defender, who was very feverish in defence, was involved in all the goals conceded.

‘He is too easily erased by Vinicius Jr for the first, he puts Alisson Becker in difficulty with his back-pass on the second, he causes the free-kick which results in the third, he deflects the ball on the fourth and is very apathetic on the fifth.

‘Klopp ended his nightmare by replacing him with Joel Matip in the 73rd minute.’

With Gomez not spared any leeway, L’Equipe then turns its attentions to Alisson – whose calamitous error allowed Vinicius Jr to equalise for Real and turn the first leg on its head.

Giving the Brazilian goalkeeper a 3/10, they quip: ‘He commits a serious blunder, by making a recovery on Vinicius which allows Real to equalise at 2-2, at a time when Liverpool gave the impression of managing the match.

‘Apart from a splendid save on a curled shot from the Brazilian winger in the first half, the Reds goalkeeper failed to be decisive during this shock – proving to be totally helpless on the three goals conceded by his team in the second half.’

Gomez and Alisson are the clear-cut lowest ratings on Liverpool’s side but only just with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson, Fabinho, Stefan Bajcetic and Cody Gakpo all receiving 4/10 ratings.

Fabinho is ‘confirmed as going through a very complicated season’, while Gakpo is accused of ‘disappearing from circulation’.

Alisson Becker received a 3/10 after he committed a ‘serious blunder’ for Real’s equaliser at 2-2

Captain Jordan Henderson and Darwin Nunez both received fives, while Mohamed Salah was the only one to go above that with a six.

Those ratings contrasted heavily with Real Madrid who had all but three of their starting XI collect a six or higher.

Vinicus Jr leads the way with a 9/10 rating after his two-goal salvo on Merseyside.

Praising the 22-year-old, L’Equipe writes: ‘The Brazilian blasted the English defence on most of his runs.

‘Even the rare times he missed his first touch, his juice allowed him to recover. The author of an exceptional goal, a lucky one and an assist for Karim Benzema.’

Benzema also got a brace and he received an 8/10 rating from his homeland’s premier paper.

Vinicius Jr (centre) earned a 9/10 rating from L’Equipe after his brace for the current holders

Karim Benzema was awarded an 8/10 after his brilliant double for the Spanish giants at Anfield

‘He first distinguished himself by his activity, like the ball he recovers and brings the goal blocked by Vinicius.

‘If he did not receive many balls to express his technical finesse, he always played fair. And he manages to finish with two goals on his only two occasions in the 55th and 67th minute.’

Fede Valverde, Luka Modric and Eder Militao all received 7/10 ratings, while Rodrygo, Dani Carvaajal and Antonio Rudiger got sixes.

Eduardo Camavinga collected a five, while Thibaut Courtois – who made a horrific mistake to double Liverpool’s lead – got a three.

David Alaba didn’t get a mark after going off injured in the first half.

Real manager Carlo Ancelotti won the battle of wits in the dugout with Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp – receiving a seven compared to the German’s three.
