Australian UFC star Josh Culibao, who overcame a brutal kick to the groin on the way to his recent octagon victory in Perth, has revealed that he is ‘annoyed’ with his gutsy performance.

The Sydney-based featherweight pulled off a remarkable comeback at UFC 284 to submit fierce rival Melsik Baghdasaryan 2 minutes into Round 2 of their bout.

In the opening round of their fight, Baghdasaryan hit Culibao with a spinning back kick to the groin that struck him so hard that the 28-year-old was struggling to breathe afterwards.

After the fight Culibao told commentator Michael Bisping that the low-blow hurt so much that he had to figure out if if his testicles were ‘still there’.

Now that Culibao’s had some time to recover, he’s revealed that he thinks he could have finished his opponent earlier if he’d taken his chances.

‘It’s a little bit of a bittersweet thing, all the build up and all the excitement in the lead up to the fight and it all happened and it’s just gone now. It’s onto the next thing,’ he told SEN.

‘To be honest, I’m a little bit annoyed with the performance, I wish I could have done a bit better. This is probably just me being a little bit over the top with that, but I’ve watched the fight back a few times and there’s definitely a lot to improve on.

‘I’m happy I got to finish in front of my friends on home soil against a guy like him, so I’m very happy about that.

‘But on a side note, I’m a little bit annoyed with the way I performed.’

The win was Culibao’s third-straight victory in the UFC, and first submission win.

During the Covid layoff, Culibao had the unique experience of training with Hollwood star Idris Elba in Sydney.

He revealed to Daily Mail Australia why the movie star chose him as a sparring partner.

‘My coach was obviously running a PT for him and he wanted Idris to have a training partner that was not going to be a d***head and hurt him.

‘You get guys with big egos and trying to prove a point, especially when you get a chance to train with a superstar.

‘[Fighters want to] puff their chest out and I’m not that sort of person – and I’m a lot smaller than him.

‘For a person that doesn’t do too much training I rate him as a very physical, big dude. He knows how to throw his weight around.’
