Fifteen years ago, when the foundation of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was laid, the seeds of a cricket revolution were sown. IPL has become an emotion that has resonated widely among fans with every season guaranteeing exceptional performances and the birth of a new generation of heroes. The ‘Incredible’ Premier League has grown significantly over the years, with two additional teams joining the fray, making it one of the most competitive cricket leagues in the world.
Celebrating the success of IPL, Star Sports organized a show – ‘The Incredible Awards’ in the presence of IPL stars and legends of Indian cricket – Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag and Irfan Pathan. Speaking at a press conference organized by Star Sports to celebrate 15 years of IPL, former Team India opener Virender Sehwag talked about how performance in the T20 franchise tournament has become an important parameter for foreign players .
“I think the competition of IPL has increased to such a level that all the players from different countries want to play in IPL. The performance they give in IPL is counted and evaluated in their respective countries. For example, David Warner did so well in the IPL and after that he got a chance to play in the Australian international team and did well there as well. Apart from this, the main advantage of IPL is that we get young players from small towns, who have given their best with the highest level of competition, have emerged and done well.

“IPL has benefited the young talent the most. Earlier, his Ranji Trophy performances went unnoticed and hence he could not make it to the Indian team. But now if you do well in IPL and showcase your talent then you immediately get a chance to play for the Indian team. Because of IPL, a lot of kids from small states of the country have started taking cricket seriously and try their best to participate in IPL and work hard for it. For example my son is 15 years old and is working hard to get a chance to play in IPL.
Former Team India spinner Harbhajan Singh also talked about how the T20 tournament has made uncapped Indian players household names. He said, ‘All the young players who have got the opportunity, they would never have thought that they would get a chance to share the dressing room with Sachin Tendulkar, Pollock, Shane Warne. When a young cricketer’s family sees him playing on TV with the likes of Shane Warne, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Dhoni, there is a sense of satisfaction in the family that the hard work of the youngster has paid off.
“It was possible only because there was a broadcaster like Star Sports. If there was no television, no face could be put on the players of any team. Harbhajan said, today we know the name and face of every IPL player because of television.
Cricket lovers can watch ‘The Incredible Awards’ on 20th February at 10 PM only on Star Sports Network.
