Tyrone Mings returned to training on Friday as he aimed to celebrate his new Aston Villa contract by regaining his place in the team to face Arsenal on Saturday.
The Aston Villa centre-back has agreed a new three-and-a-half-year deal with the club days after missing their 3-1 defeat at Manchester City last weekend due to a thigh injury.
Mings has remained a hugely important part of Villa’s squad despite having the captaincy taken from him by former boss Steven Gerrard, and the new deal reflects current manager Unai Emery’s admiration for the England defender.
He had started every league game under Emery prior to Villa’s trip to the Etihad, but now that he is back in training it is hoped that he will recover in time to go straight back into the side’s starting XI.
Mings, who turns 30 next month, joined Villa on loan in the 2018-19 season, helping them win promotion to the Premier League before completing a £20m permanent move that summer.

He is closing in on 150 appearances for the club and was a member of the England squad who reached the final of Euro 2020 two years ago.
Mings started England’s opening two matches at the tournament before being replaced by Manchester United’s Harry Maguire in the line-up.
His last appearance for his country came almost a year ago in a friendly against Ivory Coast.
But he has worked his way back into Villa’s team this season, and may still fancy his chances of returning to the international fold in the coming months as Gareth Southgate’s men gear up for Euro 2024.
