Jesse Marsch is ready to succeed Nathan Jones and take over as Southampton manager.

Marsch has told the south coast club he is willing to accept the job, following talks on Monday which left the former Leeds boss on course for what would be a swift return to the Premier League if his appointment is finalised.

Marsch is available after leaving Leeds last week, has top-flight experience and also successfully kept the Yorkshire club up last season, a job he would be tasked with repeating at St Mary’s.

Southampton are currently bottom of the Premier League, four points from safety.

Marsch is also considered a good fit for Southampton having been part of Red Bull setup they admire at New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Salzburg before following in the footsteps of previous St Mary’s manager Ralph Hasenhüttl at RB Leipzig.

Marsch has been on Southampton’s radar before and he is understood to have confirmed their positive impressions of him in his discussions with the club.

While talks continued with a view to reaching a solution, one issue that needed working out was a contract agreement that suited all parties, though Southampton’s current predicament is not one that has deterred Marsch.

Southampton travel to Chelsea on Saturday before a trip to Marsch’s former club Leeds a week later.

Southampton were open to coach Ruben Selles remaining in charge in the short-term but could now be lead by Marsch at Stamford Bridge if a deal can be finalised in time.
